the swinging, horizontal crossbar of a carriage or wagon, to which the traces of a harness are fastened; singletree. Also, whippletree.
[American English, variant of whippletree, apparently < whip in sense of “move quickly to and fro” + tree a staff, wooden bar. Compare etym. under whiffet. (Cf.whiffet)]
